Description

Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School (FMS) will be celebrating 50 years as an educational entity on Saipan. For most of those years, FMS was known as San Antonio Elementary School. In SY 2014 - 2015, San Antonio Elementary School transitioned into a middle school to serve the middle school aged students of San Antonio and Koblerville villages. On July 26, 2017, San Antonio Middle School was renamed Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School when House Bill No. 19-106 was signed by Governor Ralph Torres as Public Law No. 19-55.

Francisco M. Sablan Middle School is a feeder school for students from Koblerville Elementary School. As of May 31, 2018, 310 students were enrolled at the school, from families of Koblerville Village and San Antonio Village. Majority of our students comprise of Chamorros and Carolinian, while the other are from Micronesia, Asia, and US mainland. As of May 31, 2018, 79% or 240 students were eligible to receive free meals. In SY 2018 – 2019, all students will be receiving free meals throughout the Public School System.

In SY 2017- 2018, Francisco M. Sablan Middle School (FMS) had 310 students enrolled:

  • 6th  Grade:  108 students
  • 7th  Grade:  106 students
  • 8th  Grade:   97 students

For SY 2018 – 2019, the school welcomed 315 students for the new school year. As of September 29, 2018, we have the following number of students:

  • 8th  Grade:  103 students

Francisco M. Sablan Middle School is a STEM school in the CNMI Public School System. This school year will be our third year of implementing the Project Lead the Way STEM curriculum. Under the Gateway Program, our sixth graders are focused on the Unit: Energy and the Environment, seventh graders: Design and Modeling, and eighth graders: Automation and Robotics. We hope for continued support and another successful year with PLTW. On the same note, we continue to look for ways on how to provide meaningful training and support for our teachers and students as they engage in Project Lead the Way.

Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement

Francisco M. Sablan Middle School is a goal-oriented school, striving for continuous improvement. Every beginning and ending of the school year, we meet as a whole staff to go over data such as academic, discipline, student attendance, and others to discuss and create a plan to help our students to continue to improve and grow in all subject areas.

On July 26, 2017, San Antonio Middle School was renamed Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School, in honor of its first school principal, when House Bill No. 19-106 was signed by Governor Ralph Torres as Public Law No. 19-55.

Project Lead The Way

During the summer of June 2016, 13 teachers were certified to teach Project Lead the Way STEM Curriculum: Design & Modeling and Automation & Robotics. In June of 2017, four teachers and our Vice Principal were certified to teach Energy and the Environment. The school has and will continue to invest in our STEM curriculum. We will continue to send and support teachers in their professional growth to ensure that Project Lead The Way is taught effectively.

FMS Initiative

In SY 2015, the school scored 14% proficiency on Math based on the ACT Aspire Summative Assessment. As a result of the assessment scores, the leadership team decided that the school instructional goal will focus on math. Our goal for SY 2016 is to score at least 19% and 5% increase every school year of ACT Aspire Summative Math Tests.

Additional Information

Francisco M. Sablan Middle School for the past 3 years has been excelling in the CCLHS SBA and competitions. For School Year 2017-2018 students who competed locally won and were sent to Guam at participate in the annual University of Guam Chamorro Language Competition that was held at University of Guam, Mangilao. Students who went to the competition won 1st Place in Poetry Choral reading and 2nd place in Carolinian Mass.
